It was a warm but dewy summer morning as I walked through Lane Cove National Park with my new birding friend, Corrine and although I know the park well, it changes with the seasons and you never quite know what to expect.

This morning we were delightfully surprised by a family of three Sacred Kingfishers. Around here they love to breed in the bush, usually high up in termite nests but today they were by the river, fishing and hanging around watching us humans with innate curiosity.

A pretty dreadful photo because at this point the family were quite high up and I was shooting directly into the bright sky which made the images extremely hazy but here they are. Look at the little frazzled-looking one on the left. He must be a newbie, don’t you think?
