Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel showing great artwork and not so great graffiti

The Tower, the Bridge and the Palace all have their part in what encapsulates London but if you want to see another more vibrant side of this famous city, go for a stroll along the Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel where graffiti is not only legal but encouraged.

The Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel

The tunnel absolutely fascinates me because of the stories I imagine behind the images.  The art is ever evolving so you will never be short of an image or story to inspire your imagination.

A Little Background...

The official name is The Leake Street Arches because these are the former railway arches that linked the Eurostar entrance under Waterloo Station. The Graffiti began in 2008 when Banksy organised a group of artists to create work along the tunnel during the Cans Festival. It briefly became known as the “Banksy” tunnel.

People watching...

If the graffiti art is not enough to inspire and entertain, people watching will keep you engaged for hours.  Wedged under Waterloo Station the tunnel provides quick access across either side. As a busy thoroughfare, it provides a wealth of amusement. I met a wonderful self proclaimed “Rasta Man” who was very helpful in pointing out that the puddles on the ground were reflecting the graffiti on the ceiling. Wonderful. You never know who may become your next source of inspiration.
